When it comes to using vinyl, there is a multitude of possibilities. You can label, personalize, or decorate just about anything. However, is important to know what type of vinyl to use for your project. For this project I am focusing on adhesive vinyl.

There are two types of adhesive vinyl. Permanent vinyl is best suited for a project you want to last and can be used indoor or outdoor. Removal vinyl is for projects you may want to change up later and can only be used indoor. A cool tip for telling the vinyl’s apart when you buy the Cricut brand is that permanent vinyl has a green grid whereas removal vinyl has a grey grid. Onto today’s project, I have an old journal that is just a plain black and I’ve decided to monogram it. I am making a big K that is pink and overlapping my name in white. Below is what it looked like in Design Space and the tools I used (scrapper, weeder, StandardGrip mat, and transfer tape).

I wanted the K to be on the bottom so I cut that out first. I removed the vinyl around the edges of the letter then applied transfer tape. I peeled the letter off the backing and used the grid on the transfer tape to line it up on the notebook. I pressed it down with the scraper then pulled off the transfer tape leaving only the letter.

Then I cut my name out of white vinyl. When I removed the vinyl around the edges, it left vinyl in the letters. I used my weeding tool to pull out the unwanted vinyl. The picture below is before weeding and after weeding.

Then I applied transfer tape, peeled the name off the back and lined it up on the notebook. I pressed it down with the scraper then pulled off the transfer tape completing the project.

Below I have created a handy Infographic to explain the different types of vinyl.
